What is the Process?

You’ve asked all the right questions and determined that you want to hire an immigrant. Now what?

While hiring a newcomer can sound like a tedious process at first, it really is quite simple – and there are plenty of resources available to help you along the way.

One of the first things to determine is what category your candidate falls under. This will help to determine your path forward in hiring and employing this individual; what requirements must be met and what permits are necessary. The most common categories include:

  • Permanent Resident: An immigrant who is already living in the country and is legally entitled to work in Canada, with the same rights and obligations as a Canadian citizen.

  • Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW): An individual who requires authorization (work permit) to perform a specific role that cannot be filled within the local/Canadian work force, for a fixed period of time.

  • International Students/Graduates: An individual who has obtained a student visa and is currently studying in Canada, or has recently graduated from their educational program (within three months).
